The society was formed in 1982 by a group of local people hoping to share and encourage an interest in the history, environment and future of this ancient town with its remarkable heritage.

Meetings are usually held on Tuesday or Wednesday evenings at 8pm in the Guildroom of the Guildhall complex; entrance is via the door opposite the church.  Hadleigh Guildhall, 8pm. Entry is free for members, £3 for non-members.

Easiest parking is in the High Street car park off Magdalen Road, IP7 5EF. Walk across the High Street into Market Place and up the passageway towards St Mary’s Church.

The Hadleigh society was formed in 1982 by a group of local people hoping to share and encourage an interest in the history, environment and future of this ancient market town with its remarkable heritage.

The Hadleigh Society has three main aims:
1) To raise public awareness of the rich history and heritage of Hadleigh and its surrounding area.
2) To actively support the promotion of high standards in planning, conservation, regeneration and development of features within the Hadleigh district deemed to be of historical or environmental significance.
3) To contribute to the preservation and protection of Hadleigh’s historical documents, artefacts and buildings.

The Hadleigh Society realises these aims by:
Arranging meetings, lectures and visits
The publication and distribution of regular newsletter and occasional papers and reports
Liaising with local authorities and planning, heritage and other relevant committees
Maintaining close links with the town archive
Active involvement in relevant debates/activities/organisations with the potential to protect and enhance Hadleigh’s heritage and environment
Supporting and disseminating research into aspects of Hadleigh’s history and heritage
Responding to requests for historical information from the public and also from organisations
Maintaining links with other historical & heritage societies

Membership of the Society is open to all who are interested in actively furthering the purposes of the Society.

The Society holds 5 or 6 meetings a year with speakers on subjects usually of environmental or historic interest, and an Annual General Meeting.Meetings are usually held on Wednesday evenings at 8pm in the Guildroom of the Guildhall complex; entrance is via the door opposite the church.  Hadleigh Guildhall, 8pm.
