DESCRIPTION:The Active Hope Course\nThe following sessions will be restricted to a maximum group of 10. Participants will be expected to arrive in time and commit to all 6 sessions. Total cost is £30.00\nThese sessions will take place once a fortnight on a Tuesday evening\, from 7- 9 p.m. at Hadleigh Baptist Church Community Room (except for May 20th venue to be announced)\nDates: May 6th\, May 20th – alternative venue\, June 3rd\, June 24th\, July 8th \nOverview\nThe challenges we face can be difficult to even think about. Climate change\, war\, extreme inequality\, economic upheaval\, and the dying back of nature together create a planetary emergency of overwhelming proportions. \nActive Hope shows us how to strengthen our capacity to face this crisis so that we can respond with unexpected resilience and creative power. The course is based on the book Active Hope co-authored by Joanna Macy and Chris Johnstone and a free online training course devised by Chris Johnstone. It is designed to take participants on a journey that nourishes their capacity to make a positive difference in the world. Each section of the course introduces a practice that can be carried out as a personal reflection\, or as a structured partnered conversation\, or as a group practice. The intention is to support people in responding to the climate crisis without falling into despair\, and to strengthen our resilience and capacity to act with meaningful hope.\nIt is a transformational process informed by mythic journeys\, modern psychology\, spirituality\, and holistic science. This process equips us with tools to face the mess we’re in and play our role in the collective transition\, or Great Turning\, to a life-sustaining society. SUMMARY:The Search for Cedric Morris's Irises': Told by Sarah Cook - The Horticulturalist Detective and her plantsman husband Jim Marshall.
DESCRIPTION:A chance find at the gardens of Sissinghurst led Head Gardener\, Sarah Cook\, to develop a passion for the tall bearded irises propagated by Cedric Morris at Benton End in Hadleigh.  There in her first winter she saw a label for Iris ‘Benton Nigel’ and it made her think of home. \nWhen Sarah was a child in the 1950s\, growing up in Hadleigh she visited Benton End on open days for the Red Cross.  At the time Cedric Morris was a world-famous plantsman\, was credited with breeding the first ‘truly pink’ irises\, including one called ‘Strathmore’\, as well as being a renowned artist and co-founder of the East Anglian School of Painting and drawing with his partner Arthur Lett-Haines.  But by the time Sarah retired from her duties at Sissinghurst in 2004\, some 30 years after Cedric’s passing many of his Irises were lost. \nSarah will recount how she tracked down the missing cultivars\, with a hunt taking her around the world.  She will also give an insight into Morris’s plant breeding skills\, producing 1\,000 seedlings per year.  Along the way to repatriating over 30 of Cedric’s 90 named Irises\, including ‘Benton Baggage’ named after a cat\, Sarah has scaled the heights of British horticulture.  Sarah’s husband Jim\, enlisted Howard Nurseries to grow the irises commercially and together they took their discoveries to the Chelsea Flower Show in 2015\, winning a gold medal.  Sarah has established the Plant Heritage Historic Collection of Iris (Sir Cedric Morris introductions). \nAfter the talk\, Sarah and Jim will be able to take questions on where to acquire and how to grow Irises\, as well as some of the many other plants in their care. \n7pm Thursday 13th March 2025 Tickets for the talk and a glass of wine or soft drink @ £12 per seat\, Doors Open 6.30pm.  Tickets available from The Little Ginger Bee Shop\, or online Ticketsource \n(or search for Hadleigh Old School on www.ticketsource.co.uk)
