Historical Dance or Early Dance, as it is also known, is the study of European social dances and their development as a performing art form. Broadly speaking it covers the 12th to 19th Century. Dancing was for many centuries a necessary social accomplishment and the rigours of its custom and practice have been documented for many centuries.
Unfortunately often with no standardisation for the names of dances or steps and with few images of dancing a broad acceptance of interpretation for the earlier centuries has to be applied.
Some of the manuscripts Dancing Masters produced have survived and have been diligently translated and explored.
Historical Dance can be of interest to dancers exploring dance history, social historians, actors and those who just like to dance.
After attending my first summer school I could see a long journey of exploration ahead of me. I am happy to share my passion for these beautiful and dramatic dances
